PART-TIME RELIGIOUS EDUCATION COORDINATOR

TITLE:                                    Religious Education Coordinator

COMPENSATION:

The position is a permanent, part-time, hourly paid position for 5 hours weekly. Sundays off and vacation time negotiable. Salary is within UUA Guidelines commensurate with experience and credentials.

ACCOUNTABILITY:           The Minister is the RE Coordinator supervisor.

The Universalist Unitarian Church of Santa Paula is a small congregation in Ventura County. It was founded in 1889 as a Universalist congregation and is located in the center of Santa Paula. Its building was constructed in 1891 and is the oldest religious building in the city of Santa Paula. The church has been served since 2015 by the Reverend Maddie Sifantus. A candidate should be interested in growing a program for children and youth. The ideal candidate would demonstrate creativity and enthusiasm, have a collaborative style, and a knowledge of Unitarian Universalism. There is flexibility in this position for the right person who is interested in new models and helping a small congregation grow. The current RE Coordinator is retiring from the position as of June 30, 2017. The congregation is hoping to hire her successor before that date.

JOB DESCRIPTION

 

The Religious Education Coordinator plans and implements the Religious Education (RE) Program of the Universalist Unitarian Church of Santa Paula under the supervision of the Minister. The RE Coordinator is to provide vision and leadership to the children’s RE program in a way that is consistent with the Principles and Sources of Unitarian Universalism as well as the mission of the congregation and the congregation’s formal policies and procedures.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

·      Create a welcoming, safe, stimulating and rich educational program for the children and youth.

·       Be committed to each child's individual process of religious exploration and expression.

·      Recruit and guide volunteers.

·      Supervise an RE Assistants or paid caregivers.

·      Greet and welcome new families before church begins.

·      Coordinate special RE events such as Family Fun Night, Surprise Buddies, RE Open House, and RE Appreciation Sunday or such other events envisioned.

·      Provide publicity for the RE program through the church’s newsletter, website, and/or email.

·      Meet with Minister and Governing Board as needed. 

·      Be an active member of the church staff team.

·      Keep the RE budget, expenses, attendance and RE Committee minutes current.

·      In collaboration with the Minister, create opportunities for children’s participation in Sunday services and Multigenerational Worship.

·      Provide written report for Annual Meeting.

·      Attend RE conferences and workshops to engage in ongoing continuing education.

 

EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, QUALIFICATIONS AND SKILLS:

·      Knowledge of UU religious education philosophy and curricula.

  • Knowledge of Montessori methods a plus but not a necessity.
  • Understanding of human growth and development - physical, mental, and social-emotional.

·      Teaching experience; experience in a spiritual, religious context preferred.

·      Administrative and managerial skills.

·      Excellent interpersonal skills with children and adults.

·      Experience with recruiting and working with volunteers.

·      Personal initiative, ability to encourage others, work as part of a team, and feel comfortable with a wide variety of religious views.

·      Working knowledge of technology-based communications.
