Social Action
Our Social Concerns Action Committee meets monthly on the third Wednesday at 3 PM, most often on Zoom. Its mission is to promote the principles of democracy by working for a sustainable, just, and fair world. Grounded in Unitarian Universalist principles that affirm the worth, dignity, and human rights of every person, and the interdependence of all life, we believe our faith calls us to support others, educate ourselves and our community, and take action.
A Welcoming Congregation
The Welcoming Congregation Committee and program at the Universalist Unitarian Church of Santa Paula were formed in early spring 2001. The program is dedicated to creating, fostering, and maintaining awareness of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBTQ+) issues as they relate to our church members and potential members.
On June 10, 2001, the congregation voted unanimously to become a Welcoming Congregation, and we received our Welcoming Congregation Renewal from the UUA in 2023. UUCSP has long performed union ceremonies and fully includes LGBTQ+ people in all aspects of church life.
Sunday Plate
On the first Sunday of each month, the entire offering is donated to a local nonprofit organization. Recipients are chosen by the Social Concerns Action Committee and change quarterly. In the past, we have supported Spirit of Santa Paula, Interface, Poder Popular, De Colores Multicultural Arts, the House Farm Workers, the Santa Paula Education Foundation, and many others.
Immigration and Farmworkers Rights
The Social Concerns Action Committee has long been engaged with issues related to immigration, detainees, DACA, Dreamers, farmworker housing, and other challenges experienced by the farmworkers who live among us and provide food for tables across America.
