The Santa Paula Ministerial Association, in collaboration with Santa Paula Latino Town Hall,
CAUSE, and others annually commemorates the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by sponsoring
a historic Jazz Requiem and Tribute to Dr. King in poetry, music and song. The
nondenominational event will be held Sunday, January 19, 3:00 pm, the eve of the National
Holiday in his name at St. Paul’s Episcopal and Emmanuel Lutheran Church, 117 N. 7th St., Santa
Paula.
The event was originally performed by renowned musicians and actors in New York on April 4,
1969, a year after his death, 51 years ago. This year’s anniversary will feature vocalist Rev.
Maddie Sifantus and readers Rev. Cynthia Jew and Marques Guy accompanied by members of
the Studio C Band and the Santa Paula High School Jazz Ensemble.
Keynote speaker Dr. Alma Hawkins, Claremont Theological School professor. The program will
be followed by refreshments, community-building, and a closing circle.
